The original work
A botanical encyclopaedia devoted to orchids.
The first edition of Lindenia was published in French between 1885 and 1906 in the form of a monthly review. From February 1891 to July 1898, a version partly in English was also published.
The 814 plates in Lindenia are more than a record of botanical orchids: together, they form a true encyclopaedia. The drawings depict species collected in tropical forests and cultivated in the greenhouses of leading collectors.
One or two pages of text accompany each plate. They give the Latin identification of the species and bibliographical references, followed by a description of the plant: where it was discovered, how it was collected and acclimatised, and how it was distributed around the world, with advice on cultivation.
In 1993, Jean-Michel Veillard decided to reprint the French edition. In 1994, he decided to publish the first and original complete English edition.
